Five Odd Foods to Get Swöle

  1. Tvorog: This is a soft cheese I was first exposed to at a local goat dairy about 7 years ago.  It is made without rennet which is why it never fully hardens.  It is incredibly tasty and can be spread over dishes, used in cooking, or eaten plain.  I always prefer just plain tvorog because it has a nice, gentle flavor with a slight bit of sweetness.  It is high in calcium and protein, much of which is from a high casein content.
  2. Kombucha: One of the best ways to ensure a healthy gut, kombucha is an incredible fermented tea.  In 2005, I began making kombucha on a regular basis during my college years after studying Weston A. Price’s work and finding early German studies on kombucha that showed it delayed the development of lactic acid in high volume training.  It has a sour flavor that takes on any sweetness when you add the fruity flavor of choice after brewing.  
  3. Kefir: Another guide for a healthy gut.  My first run with kefir came in my sophomore year of college after an Amishmen provided me with some traditional kefir grains to brew up with my raw milk.  I quickly understood the power of this traditionally fermented dairy product from the Caucasus Mountains.  With over 3 dozen strains of bacteria, this dairy product can provide a very impressive amount of bioavailable proteins to be used post-workout.  It is said that Genghis Khan and his soldiers used Mare’s Kefir throughout their pillaging of the western world because of its nutritional factors!
  4. Scrapple: Scrapple is typically made of hog offal, such as the head, heart, liver, and other trimmings, which are boiled with any bones attached, to make a broth. Once cooked, bones and fat are removed, the meat is reserved, and (dry) cornmeal is boiled in the broth to make a mush. Sounds gross doesn’t it? Oddly enough, scrapple has an incredible flavor, it is crispy with a healthy meat-like taste that goes incredibly well with eggs.  Liver, heart and other organ meats are VERY HIGH in mineral and vitamin content and can also provide a strong protein content for recovery!
  5. Egg Shells: This may be the craziest one I love to consume.  Boil egg shells in a pot, then place them on a drying rack and bake them for 30 minutes at 200 degrees.  This will dry out the egg shells and make them a bit more brittle. Place the shells in a VitaMix or NutraBullet and blend till they are a fine powder.  This powder is a powerful calcium concoction.  Dr. Ray Peat has done plenty of research that shows high doses of calcium can lead to higher levels of growth hormone and faster recovery overall!
