There are numerous factors that go into a stable overhead position.  In this blog, I am specifically referring to the overhead position of the snatch and jerk.  What is each athlete’s background?  Were they shot putters, wrestlers, field hockey players, swimmers, soccer players?  All of these sports will have a different impact on the development of overhead strength.

Recently, I have been on a lazy man’s training program.  Since my retirement from throwing, I have wondered aimlessly around the weight room.  For a while I was just focusing on my Olympic weightlifting, but my arthritic elbow (caused by shot putting and lyme disease) continued to haunt me.

If you follow wrestling, it’s very likely that you have noticed a significant change in wrestling styles over the past 3-5 years.  Rules have changed a bit in folk style wrestling and outside of riding time; things have been pushed to be more action packed in the neutral position.  Some scrambles from this past weekend’s NCAA championships were incredible, not just entertaining but downright impressive

Everyone seems to make some excuse when it comes to training.  They don’t have time, they have kids, they don’t know what to do, etc.  One of the biggest things I learned when having children is to prioritize the time in the gym and even if it is only 20-30 minutes, pick one or two lifts and hammer away!

This past week, Caitlin and Hayley Reichardt spent their time at the Olympic Training Center.  This was in preparation for the first youth international meet held at the OTC.  Hayley was the team captain for the women’s team as she had previous experience on the international level (Pan Am’s last year).  Caitlin had a blast coaching new athletes and being around the senior athletes and Zygmunt, the head coach of USA weightlifting.
