I had a doctors appointment the day before thanksgiving. I asked to be checked and have my membranes swept if there was any cervical dilation. The midwife said the cervix was 2cm dilated and membranes were fairly separated already so the sweep wouldn’t have much effect, but she did it anyway. I had an induction scheduled for the following week, and I knew that if labor didn’t start on its own the end was near. Later that afternoon contractions started. They were not too intense or regular so I didn’t bother timing them, but they weren’t going away so I asked my parents if they could come up to stay overnight in case we needed to go to the hospital.

Jokes were made prior to the birth of our twins about our selected names. No one knew what they would be, people wanted to guess and question what crazy names we would come up with and what contrarian aspect we would use for naming them. Naming kids has always been enjoyable to me, something that brings excitement to the entire process and is always a crazy time as the parents bounce ideas off one another. In all reality, I always feel like children really “take on” their names. They embody the name and very rarely do I find myself meeting someone and thinking, “Boy, that person should have been named X instead of Y.”

Many of you know about Anton, you have seen him moseying around the gym, sleeping on his bed or taking a poop on the turf to spite DJ. He had a serious run. I adopted Anton in 2004 when he was two years of age. I had been arrested for fighting at Penn State and needed to serve community service to expunge my record and decided to do so at the Humane Society. Anton (Trouble was his name at the shelter) was there the entire week. His card said he was not good around other dogs or around children. By my last day at the Humane Society, Trouble (Anton) was still in the slammer. He was due to be put down the next day if no one adopted him. I felt bad for him. Every day he would lick my fingers and sit there and shake while I pet him. So I did what every naive college student would do. I decided to adopt him.

It was early Black Friday morning, Thanksgiving was over but the turkey bloat was still slowing everything down. Leftovers were abundant but at 3 AM, who has time for that? Caitlin had warned me after Turkey dinner to pack my bags, “in case I go into labor.” I packed them reluctantly, who would ever want to make a woman pregnant with twins upset, certainly not me!  I heard some talking on a phone at 3 AM and recognize Caitlin’s voice while I laid in hibernation in our bedroom and it all registered… “Hi, I am calling to tell the midwives that my water just broke.” I immediately jumped up, got out of bed and knew it was go-time. I remembered back to Lincoln’s birth, the intensity of it, the joy and the emotions, it’s an incredible experience and I was thrilled that we were going to be having another awesome experience in the coming hours.
