Keystone State Games

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Last weekend, Garage Strength had three athletes compete in the Keystone State Games.  Amanda Hottenstein competed in the women’s shot put but didn’t have a great day.  Jason Coon threw well to win his group for the youth shot put.  Jason is headed to AAU Nationals in Des Moines, Iowa.  He has been throwing very well and should do well at the national meet.  Frank Duca competed in the powerlifting section, deadlifting nearly 600lbs and bench pressing 330lbs in the 198 pound category.  Frank is a repeat Keystone State Games champ.  Here are some images of the two champs.

Fresh: The Movie

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

This past Thursday I attended a Raw Milk conference at Forrest Stricker’s large dairy farm in Wernersville, Pa.  It was a great conference.  There were people of all backgrounds discussing numerous different topics in regards to raw milk and trying to spread the word to support many of these local farmers so we can sustain ourselves locally and provide the absolute highest quality product.

Speaking at the seminar was Jonas Stoltzfus, a PA farmer promoting raw milk and local economies.  This movement is certainly growing as many of these farmers discussed the options to continue expanding their client base and provide raw milk for the local community.

While there, I also met a woman from Philadelphia who gave me a copy of the movie, “Fresh.”  I highly, highly, highly, recommend finding someone that has Fresh and checking it out.  In the near future I would like to have a viewing of the movie at Garage Strength.  It is a great movie, showing the processes of agriculture (industrial and local) and then showing solutions to the problem.  The great part about it is that many people complain about certain issues yet never really have a sound solution to things.  This movie goes very in depth with the solution!!!

“Fresh” is something that is great for athletes and great for non-athletes alike.  Here is the website and I do have a copy of the movie so stay tuned for future opportunities to check out the movie at the Garage.

Finally, Great Nutrition Article

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

For the first time in a while, I am impressed with a fairly mainstream website.  Forbes.com has decided to promote some decent ideas behind nutrition.  Dr. Johnny Bowden has written a great introductory article on nutrition that I highly recommend people read.  Bowden knows his stuff and even seems to understand the Cholesterol Myth and the attacks on Saturated Fats.

I am quite pleased that someone in the mainstream media has decided to start putting out sound nutrition advice. Anyway, feel free to check out this quick article as it is a good read!!! He even mentions raw milk and grass fed beef!

BIG NEWS!!!

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

I am in the process of planning a Garage Strength Peak Performance Seminar.  The speakers will include: Mark Lopez of Wholesome Dairy Farms, Brooks Miller and Anna Santini of Chestnut Hollow Farm and myself.  We will be discussing a few different topics.

The date of the seminar will be September 19th and the cost will be $35 dollars a seat.  We are in the process of creating a brochure for the seminar, hopefully that will be completed by the end of the week.  It should be a great seminar and very informative.  I am hoping we have three 30-40 minute presentations, each followed by a Q and A session.  I look forward to the response.  If anyone is interested, feel free to email me.

Wild Salmon in the Yukon

Wild Salmon in the Yukon

Whenever consuming fish, try your best to find a wild product as opposed to farmed fish. Wild fish (from healthy water sources) are higher in omega 3’s, are overall healthier fish and in my opinion taste much better than farmed fish.

Wild food is food in its most natural state. Wild foods can provide tons of healthy nutrition and are fun to harvest. Now, being that it is the summer time, I spend many hours scouring my area looking for wild raspberries. I love wild raspberries and although they can be a pain to pick, they are a tremendous treat and provide loads of antioxidants. This is why it is important that we try to preserve the wild and keep things as intact as possible.

Here is a picture an individual sent me of his father in the Yukon Territory. This is a wild salmon and the Yukon is certainly still wild!!! Anyway, check it out and if you every have the opportunity, I suggest you visit the Yukon to see what untouched landscape truly looks like!!!
