If you follow Garage strength, this book gives you insight into how they train different sport athletes. I wish there was more info on longer term planning for these sports but you can't have it all. Definitely worth having on the book shelf.
I would recommend this book to all strength and conditioning professionals regardless of your philosophy. At a minimum he does a good job of challenging the everyday strength coach to be creative. At a maximum it can transform how you apply the fundamentals of the Olympic Lifts to your daily programming. Honestly it’s a bit of a stretch to find things that were necessarily bad with the book. It does a good job of taking the finer points of the Olympic lifts and specifically creating variations for sports application. Dane applies the physiological benefit of Olympic Lifting in specific variance to meet sport demands and does so with a creative flair that only a multi-sport coach could accomplish.
I would give this the MAXIMUM number of stars. After reading Coach Miller's book, I began to directly incorporate two technical recommendations with our high school athletes that split too wide into their catch position. With these methods implemented, we not only saw a direct improvement in their lifting but also competitive sports!
An excellent guideline for someone new to developing strength training programs for athletes or for the coach who has been involved with strength training programs for years. Any individual who works in the strength and conditioning of athletes will find this a useful tool.
Dane has put together an outstanding manual of how to apply the Olympic lifts and their variations to maximize sports performance. Weightlifters are the most powerful athletes in the world so why not use at least some variation of the training methodologies that they use? Not only the power that the Olympic lifts give, but the strength, flexibility and body awareness that ALL sports could use. This book gives clear and concise information on utilizing the Olympic lifts and is perfect for the strength coach or athlete who wants to reach their full potential.
