Featured Athlete: Sam Mattis
Sam Mattis, National Champion Discus Thrower, has moved to the area to train at Garage Strength full time with a goal to make the 2020 Olympic games.
Sam graduated from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. While competing at Penn, he earned three NCAA All-American honors. Sam was the 2015 NCAA National Champion and Runner Up in 2016. Back in March, Sam unloaded an Ivy League Record and the No. 1 Discus throw in the world with a throw of 221' 3" at the Philadelphia College Classic.
Sam was named the USATFCCA/NCAA National Scholar of the year. The U. S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association selected him as the 2015 Male Scholar Athlete of the Year for Division I. He is a four-time Heps Outdoor Champion in the Discus throw and received First-Team All-Ivy honors for each of his four outdoor seasons.
2015 USTFCCCA Outdoor Mid-Atlantic Region Female Field Athlete of the Year
Qualified for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials in the shot put finishing 22nd with a throw of 15.44m (50'-8"). Set the Penn State School Record in the shot put with a mark of 17.27m (56'-8") at the Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup in 2016. NCAA Indoor All-American seventh place finish in 2016 with a mark of 17.22 (56'-6"). PIAA State Champion in 2011 in both the shotput and discus events.
Represented the country of Samoa in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. Alex represented his country at two World Championships, in 2013 and 2015. Although born in the United States, Rose holds dual-citizenship with Samoa since his father was born in that country and emigrated to the US as a 19-year-old. His personal best in the discus is 65.74 metres (Claremont, Ca, 15 May 2016).
