My interview with Taubes was a very fun time. My camera man and I headed into Manhattan Saturday morning, arriving a bit ahead of schedule. We walked around Greenwich Village for a bit prior to meeting with Taubes. I was a bit weary of the whole process because Gary had emailed me, informing me that his children and wife were both relatively ill…with that being said, Gary welcomed us for the interview. On only 2 hours of sleep, he was relatively up beat by the time the interview got under way.
Here is the best part…Good Calories, Bad Calories is a book that investigates the premise of a healthy diet. His number one complaint is that sugar and flour/refined carbs are the absolute worst thing humans can eat. We ended up discussing numerous different topics, among them: Diet and Fertility, Saturated fats and Cholesterol, Diet and Cancer, Exercise, etc…Gary provided numerous insightful responses that backed up everything he says in the book.
I informed Taubes that my biggest complaint within the book was his discussion of exercise. In the book, he doesn’t do a great job describing exercise, meaning you don’t know if the studies he is referencing are referring to aerobic or anaerobic. I did further research and believe it is quite well known and understood that aerobic exercise has little effect on weight loss. With that being said, Gary’s argument is based around food’s impact on hormones and how your hormones interact within the body. Gary and I got to talking and at that point I informed him of the research that Jeff Volek, Stephen Phinney and of course Bill Kraemer have been doing at UCONN, along with Stephen Ratamess at TCNJ. Their research points to the notion that anaerobic exercise stimulates adrenaline, testosterone, growth hormone, among others. These hormones lead to weight loss and improve overall health.
Anyway, I will be turning the interview into a dvd and then selling the interview from my website. I am hoping to have the production completed by Thanksgiving. Stay tuned as I will be posting “teaser’s” on Youtube.
