Interview with Taubes

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

My interview with Taubes was a very fun time.  My camera man and I headed into Manhattan Saturday morning, arriving a bit ahead of schedule.  We walked around Greenwich Village for a bit prior to meeting with Taubes.  I was a bit weary of the whole process because Gary had emailed me, informing me that his children and wife were both relatively ill…with that being said, Gary welcomed us for the interview.  On only 2 hours of sleep, he was relatively up beat by the time the interview got under way.

Here is the best part…Good Calories, Bad Calories is a book that investigates the premise of a healthy diet.  His number one complaint is that sugar and flour/refined carbs are the absolute worst thing humans can eat.  We ended up discussing numerous different topics, among them: Diet and Fertility, Saturated fats and Cholesterol, Diet and Cancer, Exercise, etc…Gary provided numerous insightful responses that backed up everything he says in the book.

I informed Taubes that my biggest complaint within the book was his discussion of exercise.  In the book, he doesn’t do a great job describing exercise, meaning you don’t know if the studies he is referencing are referring to aerobic or anaerobic.  I did further research and believe it is quite well known and understood that aerobic exercise has little effect on weight loss.  With that being said, Gary’s argument is based around food’s impact on hormones and how your hormones interact within the body.  Gary and I got to talking and at that point I informed him of the research that Jeff Volek, Stephen Phinney and of course Bill Kraemer have been doing at UCONN, along with Stephen Ratamess at TCNJ.  Their research points to the notion that anaerobic exercise stimulates adrenaline, testosterone, growth hormone, among others.  These hormones lead to weight loss and improve overall health.

Anyway, I will be turning the interview into a dvd and then selling the interview from my website.  I am hoping to have the production completed by Thanksgiving.  Stay tuned as I will be posting “teaser’s” on Youtube.

I am excited to announce that tomorrow I will be traveling to Manhattan to meet with Gary Taubes, journalist and author of Good Calories, Bad Calories.  The interview will be taped and formatted for some Youtube viewing and I will be sharing the results in the near future.  It should be a tremendous learning experience and a good time listening to a leader in the nutrition world discuss different topics.  If anyone has any questions they would like me to ask, feel free to email me.  Hopefully, all goes well and I will have it up on my website in the next month.

In the meantime, read Good Calories, Bad Calories.  It is a great book.  I will post my review of his book shortly.

Garage Strength Athlete cont’d…

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

DJ Shuttleworth put up over 100 yards rushing for the second week in a row this past week.  Not only did DJ rush for 132 yards on 13 carries, he also had double digits in tackles.  DJ trained hard all summer and spring and now his hard work is paying off.  Congrats to him and hopefully he continues to roll the rest of the season.

DJ can be seen in Garage Times Issue #6 doing step ups and the sled pull.  He is a beast, a hard worker and an all around class act!  Congrats to DJ.

Michael Pollan Silenced

Here is a message I was forwarded about Michael Pollan appearing at a lecture at CalTech:

Beef Industry Threatens California School over Michael Pollan Speech

Administrators at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo are coming under fire for refusing to allow the bestselling food expert Michael Pollan to give a lecture on campus about sustainable food policies. Pollan was scheduled to give a one-hour lecture last night. But the format of the event was changed after a top executive at Harris Ranch Beef Company threatened to withdraw a pledged $500,000 donation for a new meat processing facility on the campus. After Harris Ranch Beef issued the threat, the public university invited a professor with close ties to the meat industry to appear along with Pollan. Michael Pollan has been a longtime critic of agribusiness and meat production. He recently appeared on Democracy Now! and discussed pigs in factory farms.

Michael Pollan: “They administer antibiotics to these animals on a regular basis, because they could not survive without them. And the waste goes down directly below the animals into this giant cesspool that’s flushed, two or three times a day, out. And, I mean, they’re just—you know, they’re incubators for disease. The sows remain in crates their whole lives, so they can be conveniently inseminated, and they have their babies right there in their crates. You know, to go to one of these places is to stop eating industrial pork, basically. I mean, if we could see into this industrial meat production, it would change the way most of us eat.”

Coconut oil and Swine Flu

Friday, October 16th, 2009

Apparently, numerous “experts” are jumping on the coconut oil bandwagon.  I am a huge proponent of coconut oil. I believe it has incredible anti-viral capabilities stemming from the lauric acid.  It is also loaded with short and medium chain fatty acids which play a tremendous role in fueling our metabolism.  Coconut oil can lead to healthy skin, healing of inflammation, healthier moving bowels, healthier stomach, more energy and weight loss.  Coconut oil is one of the healthiest fats out there, along with lard and butter.

Anyway, apparently numerous doctors are promoting extra virgin coconut oil as a protective way to avoid getting the swine flu.  Coconut oil consistently gives a massive boost to the immune system and it is finally getting recognized by circles in the “mainstream.”  I recommend Extra virgin coconut oil, avoid the refined coconut oil and buy organic as well.
