One issue I seem to split on with other strength coaches is the notion of a “cheat” day. I am not a fan of a cheat day. In fact, I despise them. I do not believe there is time in life to take a break from human performance and I believe nutrition is crucial to operating as optimally as possible. The human body is in constant need of quality foods and “cheating” can lead to issues not only physically, but also mentally and emotionally.
Some obese individuals may take one cheat day a month, and eventually that increases to one cheat day a week and finally everything becomes a cheat day!!! I know this is a worst case scenario but many overweight individuals suffer from an addiction to certain foods (sugar is addictive!!!!). For this, I recommend avoiding these foods altogether. Do not view things as a “cheat” day or as a diet…instead, view it as a change in lifestyle. A permanent change.
I have a tendency to carry things a bit far but I am very pationate about training and nutrition and its relevance to a healthy lifestyle. At times, I have even asked patients a question…”Do they give cocaine addicts a cheat day in rehab? Should a crackhead continue to smoke crack once a month or once a week? NO!!!”
Again, I understand this is a bit of a stretch of an analogy but I am serious about living life as healthy as possible. Make the right decision and eat well on the weekends!! That is the time when many people fall off the wagon.
