Updates on Renovations

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

The new shed is nearing completion.  We are now capable of moving things out of the Garage and expanding to control the entire Garage (sounds like a battle, haha).  We have also been building walls and adding insulation throughout the Garage to further energy efficiency.  In the next few days, I will post videos of the new training area, updates on the Garden and a new training video that includes single leg squats.

Next week is the Garage Strength throws clinic.  If anyone is interested in signing up, feel free to email me.  It will be a great learning experience for everyone and an intense four days of training.  Train hard and stay focused!!!

Feats of Strength and Speed

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Being a throws enthusiast, I get amped up watching just about anyone compete in the field events in track and field.  I love the hammer, shot put, discus and javelin.  All of them require tremendous amounts of speed, strength and numerous other intricate modes of training.  They are incredibly difficult to train and the throws take a very taxing toll on the mind.  The throws, like many other sports, have the ability to completely break down an individual, only to have that same individual come back with a massive feeling of euphoria.  That is what makes the sport so intense and so awesome.

I wanted to share this video of Gerd Kanter.  Along with Virjilius Alekna, Kanter has been a main stay in the discus scene for a few years now.  He shows incredible speed, power, flexibility, coordination, etc…I will be honest.  He is a BEAST!!!!  Check out the video here.  Scroll down and click on Kanter 71.64 to see his abilities.  Just incredible.  I wonder if this time of speed and ability would pay off in other sports?  OF COURSE!!!  Enjoy.

Stressed out?

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

I have  a few friends that choose to let their stress out in fairly negative ways.  Perhaps they will go to a buffet and eat as much food as possible or maybe they will head to the local bar and drink as many beverages as possible.  Either way, neither option is the healthiest thing for the body, mind or in certain cases…our society.

What can you do?  Well, lifting weights, walking, eating a sociable meal or spending time with the family are all tremendous ways to let out some inner energy.  Get lost in the activity and just let loose.

What if I am stressed from training?  Well…go to the batting cage!!!  I know it sounds absurd but try it.  Odds are, you haven’t hit a baseball since Little League so get a bat and work on your coordination.  Hit the ball as hard as you can.  The next day your arms, abs, back and legs will be sore.  And better yet…its a ton of fun!!!  Don’t like baseball?  Head to the driving range. Same idea and good fun.  Give it a whirl.

Jon Kalnas Training and Renovating

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

Jon Kalnas has been training at the Garage this week for a mini training camp prior to US Nationals for track and field.  He has been throwing well and looking good.  Today he had a very, very intense throwing session and will spend the rest of the day recovering with great Pennsylvania food.  I am excited to see what the next week brings with his training.

The Garage has been tremendously busy this week.  I have been struggling to find time to train, eat and write on my blog and keep up my website.  This has absolutely infuriated me.  Generally, I take about a week to adapt to a hectic schedule before I figure things out.  I have gotten a bunch of new clients and it is a lot of fun to see expressions on individuals faces when they realize how absolutely far they can push themselves, not only physically but also mentally.  Training is always a growing process and I believe it is crucial for developing the mind, body and overall attitude toward life.

This past week I have been laying down cement and building a 12 x 20 shed.  This will enable me full range of the Garage.  I have decided to delay any new videos until the shed is complete and everything is moved out of the Garage.  I am quite excited for this and very excited to expand and be a better facility for my clients.  Feel free to stop by anytime from 4-6 for free training.

Eat Well on the Weekends

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

One issue I seem to split on with other strength coaches is the notion of a “cheat” day.  I am not a fan of a cheat day.  In fact, I despise them.  I do not believe there is time in life to take a break from human performance and I believe nutrition is crucial to operating as optimally as possible.  The human body is in constant need of quality foods and “cheating” can lead to issues not only physically, but also mentally and emotionally.

Some obese individuals may take one cheat day a month, and eventually that increases to one cheat day a week and finally everything becomes a cheat day!!!  I know this is a worst case scenario but many overweight individuals suffer from an addiction to certain foods (sugar is addictive!!!!).  For this, I recommend avoiding these foods altogether.  Do not view things as a “cheat” day or as a diet…instead, view it as a change in lifestyle.  A permanent change.

I have a tendency to carry things a bit far but I am very pationate about training and nutrition and its relevance to a healthy lifestyle.  At times, I have even asked patients a question…”Do they give cocaine addicts a cheat day in rehab?  Should a crackhead continue to smoke crack once a month or once a week? NO!!!”

Again, I understand this is a bit of a stretch of an analogy but I am serious about living life as healthy as possible.  Make the right decision and eat well on the weekends!!  That is the time when many people fall off the wagon.
